World Languages

In an increasingly interconnected world, Heritage's world language students have a unique opportunity to engage with different cultures. Our language programs go beyond highlighting differences; they emphasize the common threads that unite humanity. Whether students are delving into grammar and vocabulary, immersing themselves in cultural activities, or embarking on international adventures, our foreign language department's focus is on fostering genuine understanding.

We firmly believe that learning a foreign language is not only a practical asset for future careers but also a means to explore one's own roots, history, and language, leading to personal growth and a broader perspective.

Our language journey begins with Early Learners and Lower School students, introducing them to the world of foreign languages. As students progress to Middle School, they can choose between French and Spanish. This path extends into Upper School, where language clubs offer a space for refining linguistic skills through volunteering and engaging events.

To encourage both learning and a sense of community, our department organizes various experiences, including International and Domestic trips throughout the year. From captivating European spring breaks to enlightening winter trips to Quebec, these opportunities enrich students' cultural horizons.

Our Heritage language classes are designed to approach students with a growth mindset so they comfortably develop their language skills and cultural knowledge with confidence, self-awareness,  and, metacognitive and collaboration skills. Through a combination of well balanced classroom activities, field trips, cultural events, and real life learning experiences, our students maximize their opportunities to practice the language, take risk, and improve their ability to communicate confidently in the target language.
