HS BASKETBALL: Lady Hawks smother Flint River; Heritage, Trinity boys teams to battle Thursday
Heritage School’s girls basketball team kept its focus on defense early in the 2018-19 season, limiting Flint River to four field goals and zero points in the fourth quarter en route to a balanced 65-10 victory on the road Monday in non-region play.
Every member of the Lady Hawks managed to contribute points in the effort, which had Heritage storming out to 18 points distributed between six players.
Senior point-guard Carissa Vazquez led the way with 16 points over three quarters.
Aaliyah Ferrell added 10 and Adria Pierce finished with nine for Heritage, which begins region play on Tuesday at Creekside Christian.
Scorers for the Lady Hawks also included Emily Walker, who had four of her seven points in the second quarter to help her team take a commanding 32-8 lead into halftime.
Zada Smith finished with five points, all coming in the second half, while Emily Cushing and Kendall Stephens each had four. Danielle Sudick, Olivia Ayers and Tricia Underwood each added field goals.
Heritage School’s boys game was canceled by Flint River officials and will have to be rescheduled.
The Hawks are looking to get back on track following two tough losses in tournament play last week. Heritage dropped a 65-48 decision to DME Academy out of Daytona Beach, Fla., on Saturday.
Earlier last week, Woodward Academy came away with a 63-58 victory over the Hawks, who are now 2-2 overall.
Heritage hosts Trinity Christian’s boys in a friendly non-region contest in a rematch of last year’s GISA Class AAA semifinal game that went to overtime.
Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
The Lions were off to a 3-2 start heading into Tuesday’s trip to Whitefield Academy after making the move to the GHSA this fall. Trinity defeated Fulton Leadership Academy 42-34 at the Hard in the Paint Classic on Saturday.
